6 ways a coach can help you achieve your goals
For some people, the idea of talking to a life coach is the last thing they want to do.
There are lots of different reasons someone might not like the idea of working with a coach:
They might assume that their life is pretty sorted and they don’t need any help
They might assume that a coach is just going to give them ‘one size fits all’ advice
They might have a group of friends who they turn to for advice and assume that’s enough.
They might think it’s too expensive.
They might think it’s ‘something other people do’
Whatever the reasons (and you might see some above that are resonating), let me share some of the brilliant things about working with a coach!
1. A coach is not the same as a therapist
It’s a common misconception that working with a life coach is the same as seeing a therapist, however they’re completely different things. Whilst a therapist will help you identify and work through issues from your past that may be holding you back in the present, a coach is all about looking forwards to the future and identifying your goals and intentions.
2. A coach is objective
Of course your friends are well-meaning and only want the best for you, but any advice they might give you is bound to be subjective: they’re looking at your life through their glasses. It may not be intentional, but anything they say to you will have first been filtered through their viewpoint: how does it affect them, what would they do in your situation, what have their outcomes been in the past? A coach is able to be entirely objective and give you the guidance that’s best for YOU.
3. A coach will hold you accountable
Having a big plan for your life is wonderful, but what are you doing to achieve your goals? All too often we say we’re going to do A Big Life Changing Thing, but then don’t do anything to move ourselves forward. A coach will not only help you make those plans but will also keep checking in with you about them, holding you accountable for doing what you say you will.
4. A coach will listen
9 times out of 10, when we have a problem, we already know what the solution is, but either we can’t see the wood for the trees, or don’t have the right people to talk through our options with: how often have you wanted to talk a problem through with someone but felt guilty for taking up too much airtime in the conversation, or had a solution imposed on you? Talking things though with a coach can guide you to the solution in a relaxed way that allows you to look at all the options available to you and come to your own conclusions.
5. A coach will motivate you
You know you need to change things up… and you will… just as soon as you’ve gotten up off the sofa. It can be difficult to find the motivation needed to initiate changes in your life: change is scary, after all. A good coach understands this and will help you figure out what you need to find inspiration. They they’ll hold you accountable for staying motivated and making those changes (see Point #3)!
6. A coach is an investment
Working with a coach doesn’t come for free, and I know that in these precarious times we’re all thinking about cutting costs, not laying out more money, especially if you think that seeing a coach is a trivial expense.
So why not think of it as investing in yourself? If you pay a gym to keep your body in shape, why wouldn’t you want to invest in keeping your mental health and well-being in top form as well? Unlike therapy, working with a coach tends to happen over a short period of time. It’s a stepping stone on the path to where you want to be in life, not the actual path, and you deserve it!
